Say goodbye to ‘gossip’ magazines?

Hair salon removes ALL ‘gossip’ magazines after death of former Love Island host Caroline Flack.

We’ve all been there, plonked directly opposite an unavoidable mirror looking less than glamorous with a head full of foils, and what better way to distract ourselves than indulge in various magazines?

Headlines such as, ‘Hurt & Humiliated’, ‘Troubled & Lonely’ and ‘Clinging to their men’ are the norm in most showbiz magazines. Which sparks the question, have we all became accustomed to such derogatory story lines about celebrities?

In truth we’re all guilty of reading, purchasing and sharing this type of media (even outside of the salon), which is why publications still produce such articles. Yet it’s highly unlikely that we would ever speak about someone we knew in real life like this.

After the suicide of 40 year old presenter Caroline Flack, #bekind begun to circulate on social media; after various individuals vowed that the perpetual articles wrote about Flack during the run up to her trial contributed to her death.

Vanity Hair & Makeup in Durham shared their decision to remove all gossip magazines from their salon via Facebook.

Salon owner Kimberley Howe, 37, commented:

“I’ve stopped buying them for my salon and would encourage other people to do so as well. They are damaging, as we sit and scrutinise everybody. Our aim is to make our clients feel happy, and the last thing they need is to see unrealistic pictures and untrue stories.”

Since the death of Caroline Flack on the 15th February more than 850,000 people have signed a petition named ‘Caroline’s Law’, that would make it a criminal offence for the media to ‘bully’ an individual.

Online retailer In The Style raised  £200,000 in 24 hours for the Samaritans, by producing a tee shirt with the words ‘in a world where you can be anything… Be kind’ – a quote that Caroline Flack had shared on her Instagram
