Despite being a weekday there isn’t a spare table in sight at Caffe Bistro 1901 in Jesmond. Amongst the swarm of people we spot Laura and her adorable cavalier King Charles Henry; “I’m mainly working from my kitchen and coffee shops” she confesses, her table an organised chaos of notebooks, wires, and various Apple devices.
After studying for a Masters in Politics Laura soon realised that she didn’t enjoy the topic, which is why she embarked on a career within Marketing and Communications. “As it was based in Carlisle I had to travel for three hours a day, but I loved it, yet always knew that I wanted to run my own businesses.” Which is how an idea formed in September 2019 became a reality just two months later, in the form of High Life North.
High Life North is a digital magazine for women in the North East that focuses on four categories: look good, feel good, work hard, play hard. The website’s content is a mixture of influential interviews from stylists, charity CEO’s,career driven women, and an influx of lifestyle and fashion advice.
“I wanted to create something relevant and accessible: a commuter in mind,”
Explains Laura
Poised and looking enviously chic in a high neck grey jumper with silver threading, “I’ve just stopped wearing eyeliner”, she tells us, as we speak about the upcoming warmer months to distract ourselves from the dreary British weather, “The no-makeup makeup look is a trend I’ll be wearing in spring.” Alongside wishful thinking about spring the topic switches to fashion, “It sounds cliché but pastels – an all lilac outfit”.
On the 4th March High Life North will host their first event by joining forces with Miss Menopause and Nat West Bank. “We’re going to have inspirational talks, networking and stalls – my plan is to host events which are focused around each category. (Look good, feel good, work hard and play hard.)”
